Possible trajectory of resting-state functional connectivity changes in subjective cognitive decline for default mode network and medial temporal regions based on cross-sectional analyses. Observations of both greater and lower functional connectivity in SCD could suggest a nonlinear change trajectory over the progression from subjective to objective impairment, highlighting the need for longitudinal analysis. Early synaptic disruption may lead to noisy signal propagation across systems or early compensatory processes that underlie elevated functional connectivity which may transition to lower functional connectivity as neurodegeneration progresses and objective decline become more apparent. Furthermore, this trajectory might shift depending on the brain regions evaluated as some groups report complex patterns of both higher and lower functional connectivity in SCD
